Project « From archaeological site to museum: managing objects found on digs »

Taking in finds from recent digs and knowing how to preserve them for the long-term, incorporate them into their collections and display them to different audiences are all on-going challenges faced by archaeological museums.

And so Mariemont has over time received the finds from a large number of digs in the Hainaut region (Trivières, Fontaine-Valmont, Liberchies, etc.). This archaeological material was processed and digitised in 2009-2010 as part of the first stage of work on the collections.

Today, preparations are being made for a new phase which should take account of changes in the preventative conservation regulations, the object registration standards and the occupancy rate of the reserves. So, a labelling protocol for the archaeological objects has been developed, based on several parameters such as the representative nature of the collection, its conservation and suitability for museum display.
