Mariemont's Treasures
After a presentation on the history of the estate, we’ll introduce you to a selection of the finest works in each collection. Ideal for your first visit to the museum. We want you to love the museum as much as we do!
Aromas of Antiquity
Perfume vases, cooking implements, decorative motifs... illustrating the delicate and more marked aromas of other places and other times. Let us lead you by the nose through our permanent collections. There is an option of a 2-hour olfactory workshop with perfumer Olivier Kummer after the visit.
Tea, the taste of China
Travel from China to Europe to discover the history of tea and the utensils used in its consumption. After the visit, there is an option of an Introduction to the Chinese tea culture workshop.
Hygiene, healthcare, cosmetics and make-up
To keep yourself healthy: a little water, a lot of perfume and lots of prayers… body care or the clever tricks used to mask the defects? Hygiene and hygiene techniques through the civilisations with some rudiments of mythology and etymology. Find out about the beauty products and their not-so-innocuous ingredients…
Women in Antiquity
The status of women which varied widely across civilisations and eras, marriage, childbirth and grooming. Topics that are just as relevant today.
From tablet to tablet, an alternative history of the book
From lines to letters, basic graphics to elaborate writing systems (cuneiform, hieroglyphics, Chinese characters, Greek and Roman alphabets), museum objects help us to understand written records but also to contextualise the history of the book. From Mesopotamian terracotta tablets to modern-day books (including eBooks), via manuscripts, incunabula and artists’ books, we take a look at an object we are all familiar with.
Latin and Greek plant names
Why did Narcissus metamorphosise into a… narcissus? How did Achilles use his heel ? What links Daphne to the laurel tree? What was the houseleek (Jupiter’s Beard) used for? What do chrysanthemum or heliotrope mean?
Were our Ancestors “zero waste”?
Are recovering, upcycling, re-using and recycling just a trend? Did Palaeolithic man make the best use of the resources offered to him by nature? Were Gallo-Roman amphora sometimes returnable? Did the Greeks scribble things down on pieces of broken pottery? Did the Egyptians use recycled glass? Are there any ideas and tips for us today?
