Project « A new insight into the roman cult of Mithras »

This research programme is investigating the Cult of Mithras, a mysterious god from the East who was worshipped extensively in the Roman Empire. Since 2021, the Royal Museum of Mariemont has been an important player in this field of research, following a major international exhibition organised by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme (https://mithra-project.eu/). Entitled The Mystery of Mithras: Exploring the Heart of a Roman Cult, it was accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue that has become a reference work on the topic.

The Roman Cult of Mithras is a global phenomenon that was brought to light by means of over 130 sanctuaries discovered around the Mediterranean. We learn more on the subject each year thanks to the many archaeological digs that take place. One of the main objectives of this scientific and cultural product is to gain a better understanding of this mysterious cult and introduce people to this piece of our European history.
