Exhibition's album "Women of China. A 20th-century journey"

DESCRIPTION

In 2022, the Royal Museum of Mariemont is reviving a strong part of its identity - Asian art and civilisation - and offering a new look at China. Chinese Women. A modern adventure takes you on an original journey to discover Chinese women during the most tormented century in Chinese history, between wars and revolutions, the 20th century. As a true social fresco, the exhibition traces the evolution of this female adventure: working woman, fighting woman, model woman...  In the end, it offers a renewed portrait of the modern woman, far from the stereotypes inherited from the end of the 19th century.

Using authentic objects (dresses, jewellery, puppets, etc.) and visual and audio documents, the visitor will discover the daily life of the female population, as well as the heroines vulgarised in literature and cinema. The tour includes rarely exhibited pieces, loans from seven Belgian and French institutions, as well as the Jasmine Sour collection of propaganda posters, presented for the first time to the public.

The Chinese woman questions the cultural, political and societal forces that shape our lives and provide us with an insight into our contemporary society.

This album takes the form of a magazine following the scenographic unfolding of the exhibition with a rich illustration. Able to serve both as a support and as an extension of the visit, it offers an augmented version of the didactic panels, detailing emblematic works, setting the temporal milestones and the major themes of the exhibition. It also offers a complementary tour through the museum's permanent collections by taking a look at universal themes.
