Project « Collecting books: Raoul Warocqué’s project »

Books occupied a special place in Raoul Warocqué's life. When he died in 1917, his library kept more than 33,000 volumes reflecting his interests in humanities, science and heritage. However, our understanding of the criteria that guided his acquisitions remains fragmentary.

It is worth shedding light on the collector's choices based on the rare books collection and documentation books that are still kept. The papers left by Warocqué are essential to understand the mechanisms underlying his bibliophile project, while providing information on the national and international networks involved (sellers, collectors, book lovers and friends).

The bookplates can reveal their history sometimes over several centuries, and revive lost libraries.

Research projects:

Researcher

Scientific team

The research carried out at Mariemont is organised around 8 thematic areas which reflect the specific features of the scientific work carried out in the museum sector.

There are around thirty collaborative research projects in which members of the Mariemont scientific team are involved.

The results of this research are made available to the scientific community and are the subject of ongoing accessibility work to ensure that they are passed on to the public.
