Project « Coal, gold and silver: Raoul Warocqué’s coin and medal collection »
Very little is currently known by specialists or the general public about the majority of Mariemont’s coins and medals. And yet these numismatic collections are immense and varied, spanning the East and West and from Antiquity to the early 20th century.
Their eclectic nature reflects the breadth of Raoul Warocqué’s interests and also mirrors the various sections of the Museum today: ancient coinage, medals collected during his trips abroad, testimonials of the technical and technological developments of the Industrial Revolution, commemorating events of the time , works of art produced in Belgium. These collections can be used to explore the cultural memory of a man and his era.
